pixelsDEBUSSY
So, our recording of the 3 Debussy sonatas have been released (digitally for the time being). It’s been a great collective effort and though the 3 Works call for 3 different ensemble it feels like the work of one, we’re a good team. The added challenge for me was to produce the cello and violin sonata; it was fun, but also extremely daunting. Ian Buckle produced the trio sonata. i hope this recording will reach a lot of people. It’s great music and we’ve put our hearts and so

Korngold - it’s pure gold
Erich Wolfgang Korngold was possibly the greatest composer prodigy since Mozart. He wrote the string sextet in 1914 aged 17!!! it’s just a remarkable work, for me one of the greatest pieces for string ensemble of all time. It’s written in typical polychromatic style, but packed with beautiful melodic material and is harmonically rich and challenging. I recorded the sextet with the Sinfonia of London Chamber Ensemble last year and it’s now out on Chandon. on same disc, the vio

Happy returns Mr Weinberg
Weinberg’s centenary celebrations came to a close for my part last Thursday at the Cosmo Rodewald concert hall in Manchester. So, in this last instalment; 24 Preludes for solo cello. An hour‘s worth of uncompromising music; sometimes witty, sometimes achingly fragile and soft and frequently hysterical, brutal and frenzied. For sure, one of the ‘toughest‘ gigs to date. I can’t hang around for the next centenary, so the mission must be to perform this great music frequently, re

Debussy's Fools
No better way to spend a 6 hour train journey; editing the Debussy sonata which I recorded with Ian Buckle on April fool's. We’re arguing about how many times we have performed this amazing work together. Somewhere between 30-50 I reckon.

The Double Act
Latest Weinberg instalment tonight with my compatriot, fabulous pianist Kristian Lindberg. A concert focusing on the relationship between Shostakovich and Weinberg, both personally and professionally. One of the most interesting double acts in all history of music, surely...?
